Jennifer will give us her....Top 5 Scary YA Characters of the Last 5 Years
YA fiction is steeped in horror icons. Witches and zombies, werewolves and ghosts, vampires and vampires and vampires, and more vampires. But, for me, the scariest characters in YA these days aren’t the usual suspects. Here’s a list of my top 5 scary YA characters and why they freak me out:

1. President Snow from “The Hunger Games” trilogy – He’s a ruthless dictator who forces kids to fight to the death, and smells like blood and roses.2. Dolores Umbridge from “Harry Potter” – She loves the color pink and anything else cutesy, but nothing gives her more pleasure than punishing children.3. Freddie from “The Marbury Lens” – Freddie kidnaps Jack, and proceeds to do very bad things to him. And that’s just the beginning, because an even worse version of Freddie is waiting for Jack in Marbury.4. The Government in ALL dystopian fiction – Whether the government is banning love(“Delirium”), forcing kids to death match (“Hunger Games”), or watching every move you make (“Little Brother”) it’s terrifying because it has ultimate control. How do you fight something as big as a corrupt government?5. The Prophet from “The Chosen One” – Anyone who tries to make young girls marry old men is just bad. Bad, bad, bad.

There they are, folks! Not a single fang among them. Happy Halloween!
Mia Price is a lightning addict. She’s survived countless strikes, but her craving to connect to the energy in storms endangers her life and the lives of those around her.

Los Angeles, where lightning rarely strikes, is one of the few places Mia feels safe from her addiction. But when an earthquake devastates the city, her haven is transformed into a minefield of chaos and danger. The beaches become massive tent cities, populated by millions of homeless. Downtown is a wasteland, where a traveling party moves to a different empty building each night, the attendees drawn to the destruction by a magnetic force they cannot deny. Two warring cults rise to power in the wake of the disaster, and both see Mia as the key to their opposing prophecies. They know she has a connection to the freak electrical storm that caused the quake, and to the worse storm that is yet to come. Mia wants to trust the enigmatic and alluring Jeremy when he promises to protect her, but he’s hiding a more sinister truth. When the final disaster strikes, Mia must unleash the full horror of her strength to save them all.

Debut author of STRUCK. Earthquakes, doomsday cults, a teenage lightning addict, and the end of the world. May 8 2012, FSG/MacMillan.
