Arthritis is a name given to disorders in joints in the human body. The disorder most commonly manifests in pain at a particular joint. The pain is caused by inflammation of a joint. When two bones in a human body are joined, a tough and flexible covering of tissue exists at the end of individual bones. Any dysfunction of the cartilage and bone system results in pain.
Osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis are major forms which affect many humans. Although the end result of both disorders is acute pain, they are caused by two distinct reasons. The wear and tear of the bones at the joint is a common form of arthritis, specifically known as osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis generally affects those bones, which support the human body against gravity, like knees, neck. Rheumatoid arthritis is caused by body’s own immunity system attacking the tissues around the bones. The occurrence of rheumatoid arthritis can happen almost at random and do not seem to follow a particular pattern. Since the causes of these two forms of arthritis are different, their curative therapies are also differing.
The instances of all forms of arthritis have increased alarmingly over the last couple of decades. Medical scientists and researchers have tried to comprehend the reasons for such a scenario. Specific occurrences were diagnosed, where no apparent cause was found. However a general trend did emerge. There was indeed a greater shift to younger age, where the disorder was prominently observed. It is concluded that there is increased danger to the younger generation to contract arthritis. Many hypotheses are put forward, discussed at length on numerous forums.
The younger generation is certainly moving towards obesity. Various studies point out to this distinct shift. Present day youngsters up to the age of 30 odd years have become obese. Consumption of high protein, high calorie food has added to weight of individuals. Less of physical workouts have robbed them of an opportunity to shed the flab or extra weight. Sedentary work style has also contributed to the problem of obesity. Consumption of excess alcohol is known to cause reduction in bone density. These are all changes that new lifestyle, culture has brought in. The end result is that an average human has to carry an extra weight of his or her own body. The bone structure of the body cannot revolutionize itself overnight and hence the bones become weaker because of body weight stress. This is the main reason for finding higher incidences of osteoarthritis in all age groups, but more prominently in 25-35 years age category.
The real threat of arthritis for people in their 30s is twofold. Firstly, they experience acute pain in all body movements. They feel pain while even simple walking. Incidentally, no permanent cure is found on this problem. Physiotherapy is one solution. However, it is a slow process and needs constant follow up. These processes emphasize upon improving muscle strength. Surgical interventions are also possible. Application of bracings can be tried in appropriate cases. Medicines are taken by individuals as pain killers. Further medicines with least known side effects are recommended. The second threat is the prospect of leading remaining life with severe restrictions. It will be most logical step for all in their 20s and 30s to chart their own course to lead a healthy lifestyle. If the willpower is strong, then the going becomes smooth.
