Akila and Susal Excel at Gujarat International Open Chess Tourney

Sri Lanka’s Akila Kavinda came up with a fine performance to defeat Colombian Grandmaster, Rios Cristhian Camilo in the 4th round of the 3rd Gujarat Open Grandmaster Chess Championships which is now in progress in Gujarat, India. In addition Sri Lankan youngest Fide Master 16-year-old Susal de Silva also excelled at this tourament while he got a draw with Indian Grandmaster Harsha Barkoti in the 3rd round.

Both Akila and Susal are in comfortable position with 3 ½ points out of 4 games after the 4th round. Akila after having a draw at the very first round with lower rated, Pranay Chordia of India continued strongly to score 3 straight points with Arpit Sha and Nisha Patkar both from India while young Susal also beat 3 more Indian players, Modi Jagrut, Rajanikanth Buxi and Kushal Jan. Akila will meet Indian International Master NR Vigesh while Susal will meet a Grand Master from Egypt, Fawzy Adams in the 5th round.

In fact Akila Kavinda is the trainer of Susal and both of them so far really perform well in this tournament.

Meanwhile Sri Lankan International Master, Romesh Weerawardena was able to get three points from Vishal Shah, Datta Rajanya and Guru Praksh and all three from India and lost his 3rd round game against the Egyptian Grandmaster, Hesham Abdelrahman.

The National champion FIDE Master, Ranindu Liyanage who also the Sri Lanka No. 1 is having 2.5 points out of 4 games and progressing to the 5th round. Ranindu beat Shah Neev Patil Ketan drew with Akilesh Nagare and lost to a lower rated Rai Garv all are Indian players.
