I haven't read the first Boone book, Past Life. I've been clearly missing out and need to rectify this ASAP. I read a lot of thrillers and have come across pretty much every scenario / plotline you can imagine. After Dark offers something different and original. Boone is a fascinating character, left with retrograde amnesia from injuries suffered searching for a missing woman which she hasn't recovered from and may never recover from. She has also recently been released from prison for crimes alleged to have taken place during the time she got amnesia. This is well written, engrossing and I struggled to put the book aside every time I picked it up. This is not an easy book to read. There are descriptions of a child being abused while not graphic but are not glossed over. Boone is damaged and troubled and twisted by a desire for revenge on the people who tortured her and caused her amnesia. This is a quite brilliant book. I must read Past Lives and look forward to Nolan's next book.
