AFK Meaning: What It Stands For in Text, Gaming and Roblox

Posted on the 28 October 2026 by Shoumya Chowdhury

AFK means “away from keyboard”. People type it in chats, texts and games to say they are not at their device right now, and that they will be back. “Going AFK for ten, back soon” means “I am stepping away for ten minutes.” It is one of the oldest bits of internet shorthand still in everyday use, and it is far older than TikTok or smartphones.

This guide covers what AFK means in text, gaming, Roblox and Free Fire, how it differs from BRB, GTG and BBL, where it came from (a 1989 glossary), why some Among Us players fake it, and the other things “AFK” can stand for. Bing search data shows how many people are asking.

i

TL;DR

  • AFK: away from keyboard. You are not at your device right now.
  • In text: a polite heads-up that a reply will be slow. Often paired with a time, for example “AFK 20 min”.
  • In games: the player is idle. Many games penalise it. In Free Fire CS Rank, 120 seconds of no action counts as an AFK and 8 counts bars you from ranked.
  • Origin: a 1989 FidoNews glossary defined it as “Away From Keys”, and it moved from bulletin boards into online games.
  • Not the same as BRB: BRB means “be right back” and promises a quick return. AFK only says you are away.
  • Other meanings: AFK is also a code for an airport, a railway station and a 2013 documentary title.

What does AFK mean in text and chat?

In chat, AFK is a status update. It tells the people you are talking to that you have stepped away and will not answer straight away. Nobody should read silence as rudeness, and you do not need to apologize. Merriam-Webster lists AFK as an abbreviation for “away from keyboard”.

Common ways people use it:

  • With a time: “AFK 15 min, dinner is ready.”
  • Before leaving a call: “Going AFK, back in a sec.”
  • On return: “Back” or “I am back”, sometimes written “bak”.
  • As a status: on Discord, Slack and similar apps, a status of “away” or “idle” plays the same role.

AFK is a small courtesy: it tells people not to wait on you.

AFK meaning in gaming

In online games, AFK is much more than a courtesy, because an idle player can cost a team the match. A player who is AFK is logged in, but not controlling their character. Games react in different ways.

AFK in Free Fire

Garena’s Free Fire support page spells out its rules for CS Rank (Clash Squad ranked). If you reconnect within 120 seconds you get no penalty. If you reconnect after 120 seconds, or stay online but take no action for over 120 seconds, the match counts as a loss even if your team wins, and your account gets 1 AFK count. At 3 counts you get an “AFK Warning Mail”, and at 8 counts you are barred from CS Rank. Each CS Casual or CS Rank match played without AFK behavior removes 1 count.

AFK in Roblox

On Roblox, AFK means the same thing: your avatar is in the game but you are not playing. Some experiences reward players for staying in game, which leads to “AFK farming” in which a character idles to earn rewards, and many experiences also disconnect idle players. The rules differ between games and Roblox changes them over time, so check the game’s own page or Roblox’s help pages for the current idle limit.

AFK in Among Us: the fake alibi

The social game Among Us gave AFK a new twist. According to Inverse, some players claim to be AFK while they are still playing, so opponents think they are not watching. Impostors can use the claim as an alibi or to lure crewmates who go to check on them. The tactic became so disliked that claiming to be AFK now draws suspicion.

Be careful with AFK in competitive games

Leaving a ranked match can cost your team and may lead to penalties, as in Free Fire CS Rank. If you need to step away, do it in a lobby or between matches where you can.

Where AFK shows up: four contexts at a glance

AFK appears in chat, in game rules, in Among Us tactics and in a 1989 glossary.

Where does AFK come from?

AFK is older than most people think. Inverse traces it to the bulletin board systems of the 1980s and 1990s, such as FidoNet. A 1989 FidoNews glossary defined it as “Away From Keys”. It spread as FidoNet grew, and then moved into online gaming, probably through early role-playing games. There is no written record of its first gaming use, but a 2003 Urban Dictionary entry shows it was already common in games, where players used it to signal a short break.

How to use AFK without sounding odd

  1. Add a time if you can. “AFK 10” is clearer than “AFK”.
  2. Use it in casual chat. In a work email or formal message, write “I am away from my desk” instead.
  3. Say when you are back. A quick “back” saves people from wondering.
  4. Do not use it to ignore people. If you want a break from a conversation, say so.
  5. In games, say it before you leave. A teammate cannot know you have gone unless you tell them.

  • AFK (Indian Railways code): Angamaly railway station in India.
