Adelaide on a Budget

Posted on the 29 April 2019 by Carolina Burgio @LTravelledBlog

A few weeks ago I visited Adelaide on my own for a convention. I stayed 4 nights and didn’t really have any expectations as it was my first time traveling there. I was happily surprised by the laidback, contemporary vibe of the city and blown away by the Adelaide Hills region! Now being a young, solo traveller, I was pretty conscious of not breaking the bank as I do have a tendency to go over a little overboard on shopping sometimes (always). But alas, this time I was committed to sticking to my budget, and in a city like Adelaide where all the best things are free, it was surprisingly easy to do so! With a little bit of research, you can easily make the most of your time in Adelaide without going over your budget. So here are 6 cheap or free things to do while you’re in the City of Churches.

Adelaide Central Market

This gloriously fresh produce market is one of the key highlights of the city and I’ll tell you why. It holds some of Adelaide’s best cafes, bakeries and is renowned for its multicultural cuisine. Visit The Grind @ Central for a premium coffee blend or hit up Piroshki Café, a Latvian deli that serves up kransky sausages and sauerkraut.

Glenelg

This beachy suburb is just a short 45-minute journey on the Glenelg Tram from the heart of the city. With palm trees, white sandy beaches and seafood dining, Glenelg is a must visit for its vintage charm and Instagram worthy beach. There’s heaps of family friendly activities around, and the ice cream at franchise Gelatissmo is to die for!

Rundle Mall

Adelaide’s iconic Rundle Mall features over 600 retailers and 3 major department stores, so there’s no doubt that you’ll find cheap steals along the way. Even if you aren’t shopping, the Adelaide arcade that leads out to the mall is a beautifully preserved vintage gem lined with luxurious speciality stores and stunning architecture. I personally walked through this arcade every day to get to Rundle Mall, its especially pretty around Christmas time when the arcade is line with decorative wreaths and a sparkling christmas tree.

Adelaide Botanic Gardens
Take a walk through the Adelaide Botanic Gardens to view stunning architectural designs and diverse plant life that is situated in the heart of the city. This free activity is the perfect way to spend an afternoon frolicking in the sun against a backdrop of lily ponds and a vivacious rose garden that features over 5,000 roses.

If you were wanting to check out some of the current exhibitions then you will need to pay an extra fee, however the museum is big enough for you to happily explore on it own.

This gorgeous German settlement will have you thinking that you've taken a trip to Europe, but in fact its only a half an hour drive outside of the city! Hahndorf is home to lively german restaurants, boutique vineyards, Beerenberg Farm and a historic main street. It's a picturesque village that will have you tasting scrumptious pastries, strawberry picking and drinking imported German beer.
