Accused Pleads Guilty to Fraud; Ordered to Pay Three Times the Amount Defrauded as Fine

The Colombo High Court yesterday ordered an accused to pay three times the amount defrauded as a fine to a accused who pleaded guilty to two charges of fraud by crediting  the dues of four doctors to his bank account very meticulously while working as a manager of the Salaries Department of the Colombo National Hospital.

Following the guilty plea to the charges by the accused during the trial, he was ordered to pay a fine of over Rs.10 million (10,066,770.45).

The judgment was delivered by Colombo High Court Judge Amal Ranaraja.

However, the accused pointed out to the Court that he does not have sufficient capacity to pay the fine and after considering the matter, the High Court judge sentenced him to 6 years Rigorous Imprisonment and 4 years of lenient imprisonment.

The Attorney General had filed an indictment against the accused comprising two counts under the Public Property Act for the alleged fraud in 2003.
