Remember the FM-friendly (yet still sometimes sweary) commercial rap of the ’90s? We’re talking Will Smith, Coolio, Sisqo, Prast etc. Well, on new single ‘Love Hurts’ Acab Brik captures the essence of these acts with contemporary references (Awkwafina, Timberlands and MySpace – OK, that last one isn’t so relevant nowadays), dark humor and a lo-fi, DIY electronic sound. ‘A love song to imaginary people, our real-life partners and each other’, Acab Brik laments how ‘I feel the worst when you get burned down’ before Chevy takes the mic to rap about snowflakes, leaving a phone on vibrate and how ‘this bitch is for real’.
