Abstract

Repetitive speech is very commonly seen in young babies as a part of their language development (from the 18th month to the 30th month after birth). We need to differentiate between normal repetitive speech and abnormal speech of the baby, which can develop abnormal speech and delay the speech development of your child. Echolalia is a condition in which a child repeats the words that he/she hears. No doubt it can also develop later in life when the person is an adolescent. By the age of three years, Echolalia will be minimal and can extend further in childhood. We need to know the causes and symptoms of Echolalia. In this article, we will discuss all Echolalia with its management in Ayurveda.

Introduction

Echolalia is defined as the meaningless repetition of words (spoken by someone and heard by the patient). It is considered a psychiatric disorder. They are not able to communicate properly because they struggle to express their thoughts to the other person. They just repeat the noises they hear and it makes it difficult for them to have a normal conversation. We need to understand that Echolalia is different from Tourette syndrome (patients suddenly spell/yell random words as a part of their tic). Echolalia can be a sign of autism and can cause neurological problems in the child. It can also irritate the person and also the person can get frustrated while communicating with the patient. Echolalia is of three types

  • Immediate Echolalia- child immediately repeats the sentence/ words after hearing.
  • Delayed Echolalia- child utters the words at a later time even without the intention to communicate.
  • Mitigated Echolalia- child makes a change in wordings that he/she heard and then repeats them.

Echolalia may present in many different ways and with different meanings for a particular individual. They can also be categorized as interactive and non-interactive Echolalia.

Ayurvedic Aspect

According to Ayurveda, we can consider Echolalia as a 'Vataja Vyadhi'. Aggravation of Vata in the body causes this disorder. The imbalance of Vata dosha is the main cause of the mental imbalance. Vata aggravates due to continuous feeding of Vata vardhak aahar and Vihaar to the child. This leads to both physical and mental defects in developing children. The Vaat aggravation can also impact brain nerves and cause tension in the whole body, making it difficult to recover. They are also said to be due to poorvjanam karma. Thus these are considered aasadhya rogas that cannot be managed. But Ayurveda provides treatment modalities only for the management of Echolalia.

Causes

The causes for Echolalia are unknown but are assumed to develop due to

  • Head trauma in childhood
  • Autism
  • Severe amnesia
  • Stress and anxiety (in adults)

Symptoms

The main symptom of Echolalia is

  • Repetition of words and phrases (sentence/words that are heard)
  • Other symptoms include-
  • Depression
  • Frustration during conversations
  • Ignorance and muteness
  • Irrational behavior

Diagnosis

  • Direct communication with the child/person is enough to diagnose.
  • Regular speech lesson testing can be done in developing children in many cases.
  • Based on tests the doctor will lay the stage/severity of the condition and treatment accordingly.

Treatment

Echolalia as a part of the development of language skills can cure naturally. To avoid permanent Echolalia it can be treated through a combination of the following methods

Antidepressants

Speech therapies- may reduce and help to make communication better.

However, this treatment does not treat Echolalia but reduces the side effects and other associated conditions.
