The charts on this page are from the Gallup Poll.
Gallup Has been polling Americans on abortion since the mid-seventies. The chart above shows their responses over that time. Currently, about 29% say abortion should be legal under any circumstances, and 50% say it should be legal under certain circumstances. That makes 79% who would support abortion rights for at least some circumstances. Only a tiny minority of 18% would like to see it illegal in all circumstances.
The most remarkable part of the graph is that those numbers had been very constant for more than four decades now. As hard as the radical religious right has tried, they have been unable to get anywhere near a majority of Americans to agree with them.
The chart below asks the question in a slightly different way -- Would you like to see Roe vs. Wade overturned or not? A substantial majority of Americans (64%) say they would NOT want it overturned, while only about 28% say they would like to see it overturned.
Trump has sided with the radical religious right on this issue, and rumor has it that he will be speaking on this issue in his State of the Union speech Tuesday night. That may make his evangelical supporters happy, but it won't resonate with most Americans. He will be speaking for only a tiny minority of U.S. voters.
