Last month, Marvel released the first issue of their current “Spider-Men” event, which crosses over the original Marvel Universe with the currentUltimateSpider-Man Universe. The five issue release crossover marks the meeting of original Spider-Man Peter Parker, and current Spider-Man (in the Ultimate universe), Miles Morales.

The crossover event occurs after Spider-Man sees a purple light coming from what seemed to be an abandoned warehouse. After investigating, he finds himself under attack by Mysterio. The two tussle, and Peter finds himself thrust into an alternate universe, and swings into a chance meeting with another Spider-Man. Peter comes to learn that he is deceased in this universe, and 13 year old Miles Morales has taken his place.

I’ve been somewhat on a Marvel comics kick recently, after seeing both The Avengers and The Amazing Spider-Man for a second time. Admittedly, I read the comics as a casual interest rather than a serious hobby. This series is the first that I have actually had interest in keeping up with.  From the first two issues, the differences between the twoSpider-Men is evident; Miles is very much like Peter when he first got bitten by the radioactive spider in that he is still inexperienced and learning how to use his powers. (Speaking of powers, Miles’ powers differ from Peter’s powers in that he has a venom strike and can turn invisible. Pretty nifty stuff.) I have yet to read Miles’ adventures in the more recent Ultimate issues, butSpider-Menhas caught my interest.

Overall, Spider-Men is a great Spider-Man title. Peter is as sassy as ever and if you don’t find Miles adorable yet, you will soon. And of course, special appearance by Nick Fury. Do what you will with that information.

Spider-Men #3 released yesterday, July 12, 2012. Spider-Men #1 and #2can be found in your local comic book stores. If you hate waiting around and would rather read all five issues at once, they will see hardcover release in November. This title,  ”Spider-Men” is available for pre-order now on Amazon.
