Cebu Pacific Air is once again on the lookout for five teams of daring but fun-loving college students for its second Juan For Fun Backpacker Challenge. As a prelude to the big adventure, our friends from the airline flew in the same creative agency that will handle the said contest all the way to Camiguin to give us a preview of what will happen. Our challenge was set at the stone Guiob Church Ruins in Catarman. Like the famous Sunken Cemetery, the ruins are a memory to the violent eruptions of Mount Vulcan during the late 1800’s. Presently left in the site are remnants of the convent and the bell tower.
Our group of bloggers were divided into three color-coded teams. I was put into Team Blue along with seasoned travel bloggers, Journeying James and Ferdz Decena of Ironwulf En Route. We were joking that we wouldn’t take the challenge seriously until they revealed to us the prize—round trip tickets to one of Cebu Pacific Air’s newest destinations, Phuket.
The first round tested our knowledge of Camiguin. We somewhat had an edge because I listened intently to the guide who discussed to us the history of the island. It was a game of speed also though, so the other teams were able to catch up with us. In the end, we emerged as winners and received a 30-second head start for the next challenge.
The second round is similar to the classic game, pin the tail on the donkey. James and Ferdz were blindfolded, and then each of them had to place the CEB sticker onto Camiguin of the map while I gave them directions. We were able to finish first by a slim margin.
The last challenge was somewhat the most difficult—we had to look for the Juan For Fun logo in the entire expanse of the ruins. Then, I had to take a photo of them in a jump shot. Luckily for us, we were able to find the logo easily, so we were able to finish first and win!
In sum, the Juan For Fun Backpacker Challenge, on one hand, is a test of stamina and street smarts in a fun and exciting way. But of course the primary goal is to “have as many fun and adventurous experiences and discoveries within a given travel allowance.”
