A Philadelphia Pub Crawl Inspired by “The World’s End”

The Philadelphia Version of The World’s End 12-bar Pub Crawl. Let’s make this happen all across the country!

Last Wednesday, while scrolling through my WordPress Reader feed, I noticed the words “Pub Crawl” being used in the title of the most recent post by John LaRue of The Droid You’re Looking For blog. For those of you that are not familiar with John’s blog, he mostly writes about movies and TV, so when I saw him using those words, my first thought was “Hey now! He’s muscling in on our territory!”. But then I clicked the link, read the post, breathed a sigh of relief, and all was right with the world once more. Here is what John is up to…

On August 23, The World’s End, the latest film by Edgar Wright, Simon Pegg, and Nick Frost (the guys behind Sean Of The Dead and Hot Fuzz), will be released in movie theaters. For your viewing pleasure, here’s the trailer…

Since John is a HUGE fan of Wright, Pegg, and Frost, he is heading back to his hometown of Madison, Wisconsin with several of his friends for their very own 12-bar pub crawl to commemorate the opening of this film. As you already know, the “It’s just the booze dancing…” crew are no strangers to the occasional pub crawl, so since the odds of us joining John on his Madison Pub Crawl are pretty slim, I thought that we would instead formulate a pub crawl list that would include 12 bars located in Center City Philadelphia (see the complete list in the image at the top of this post).

Of course when I had my lightbulb moment, I thought that I had come up with an original idea (i.e. piggybacking on John’s idea), but as is usually the case, I was wrong. Here is an email from John that explains all of the pub crawl related activity that the pending release of this film and John’s post has spawned…

The funny thing about this pub crawl idea… It’s really taken off. Focus Features- the distributor for the film- contacted me, told me that they’d been forwarded my idea by Edgar Wright of all people, and that they’d like to offer me “swag” (their word) for the crawl. This is after Wright tweeted my article three times, and even Paddy Considine tweeted it.   The next thing I knew, people were contacting Wright and copying me to say that they’d be doing the same thing. Most of them are in the UK. So now, on some random day in August, a bunch of people are going to be getting drunk all because I decided to go on a pub crawl.

While I may not have come up with a unique idea, I would like to see if we can help launch The World’s End inspired pub crawls (click here to read Esquire’s pub crawl rules) across the country with the help of our buddies from across the blogosphere. Here’s my plan:

  • Tag three bloggers from across the country.
  • The bloggers will compile their own 12-bar list in their hometown.
  • They will then tag three other bloggers to do the same.

Below are the three bloggers that I will tag to get this started:

Here’s hoping that we can all work together to make this happen. Stay tuned for further details as we get closer to 8/23/2013!
