A Look into HACKTIVIST

HACK THE PLANET! That line from the movie Hackers was the first thing that came to mind when I saw the title of this book. This is a series from Archaia (which is a part of Boom! Studios). I never heard of this company but it has been around for about 12 years. The thing that caught my eye was the creator of the book: Alyssa Milano.  Yes, that Alyssa Milano from Who’s the Boss? and Charmed. What was her name doing on a comic book? I had to check it out.

Right off the bat I noticed that the first issue said “Issue One of Four”. Is this it after that? Are they planning something else? I’m not too sure what the thought was about only doing four books but I wanted to see what it was about.

The first issue dove right into something going on in Tunisia and it seemed tense. It broke away from that and headed to San Francisco, CA. As the story went on, it didn’t seem like anything special or original to me. We had a cofounder (Nate) of a social networking site with his friend the other founder (Ed) who was a so called genius. Nate gets confronted by a Government Agent and is asked to use his company’s resources to help them out. It’s like it was pulled out of a 100 different movie’s plots.

This boils over to the second book where after some convincing Nate does to Ed, they help out the Government. Story moves on. Still seems like how I predicted it to move. By the end of book two, we cue the plot twist.

Now, this story isn’t anything special in my mind. If you are looking for something original or to have you thinking, this might not be the book to pick up. Although, being the man that I am, I will need to finish the series…at least. The art in the book looks decent but nothing out of this world. Alyssa is listed as a creator on the book but I’m not sure exactly what she created about it; I didn’t look into it. Her name did make me read the series though.

With two books being left, they might change my outlook on the series. Until then, I’m not holding my breath.
