He was serious.
He had made history a month earlier when he came out of the closet while the song was still at the top of the charts and made him the only artist who ever did while having a # 1 record. "Old Town Road" spent a total of 19 weeks at # 1 before being dethroned Billie Eilishis "bad guy". Follow-up single "Panini", which can also be seen on the debut EP 7 would peak at # 5.
And then the awards came.
Initially, there were eight nominations for the MTV Video Music Award. He won two, including Song of the Year, becoming the first LGBTQ artist to do so. His victory as the musical event of the year at the 53rd Annual Country Music Association Awards made him the first gay man ever nominated, let alone the first LGBTQ artist to win.
And then of course the Grammys came.
At this year's ceremony, he received six nominations, including "Best New Artist", "Record of the Year" and "Album of the Year". He won two times: "Best Pop Duo / Group Performance" and "Best Music Video". Not only that, he also delivered one of the most exciting performances of the night with guests from each of the many "Old Town Road" remixes, including Billy Ray Cyrus, BTS and Nas.
