A Look at Macy’s Christmas Windows: Santa’s Journey to the Stars

By Urbanmatter Chicago @UMatterChicago

Macy’s Christmas windows, titled Santa’s Journey to the Stars, were unveiled at 9 am on November 8th.

Flashback to 1897, Arthur Fraiser, the new Marshall Field’s display manager, decides he’s going to place the store’s Christmas toys in the window. The tradition stands for almost 50 years, until World War II, when a new design plan for the windows is unveiled. The new plan, which called for the windows to span the entire length of State Street, still stands today.

This year’s theme follows the story of Alex, a young boy who receives a telescope with the power to travel between planets for and witness their Christmas festivities. Eventually, Alex returns home, just in time for the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

Among this year’s window decoration is the somewhat controversial model of Manhattan Island populated with Chicago’s skyscrapers.

“Macy’s Herald Square featured Santa’s Journey to the Stars last year,” wrote spokeswoman Andrea Schwartz. “It was well loved by the crowds and we created a Macy’s at State Street version of these windows. These windows are new.”

Here’s a look at the display:

What’s your take?

In our humble opinion, we think the display is a nice tribute that pays homage to both the city of Chicago and Macy’s New York roots. It’s unique, sure. And no, it’s not truly Chicago, but why should they be forced to fully forego their New York heritage?

Controversial topics aside, the windows look great, though the entire experience is even better when topped off with a visit to SantaLand.

On the 5th floor, in the Kids department, Santa is paying a visit to Chicago’s children while he takes a short vacation before Christmas.

See the big man himself, snap a photo, and high five some elves this holiday season. SantaLand runs until December 24th.
