This week’s “A little place I know” is rather close to my own heart – having honeymooned in South Africa myself, it’s great to see Helen recommend her favourite place to stay in the country, and reminds me of just how much more there is to see of the fascinating “Rainbow Nation”. Helen is the owner of a bespoke travel company based in South Africa – Perfect Hideaways – which has some absolutely gorgeous properties on its books; if you’re contemplating a honeymoon in the country (and beyond – they even cover a few properties in the Med), you should definitely check out their website.

We love to go to Churchhaven on the west coast, about an hour’s drive from Cape Town. Whalers Way is a rustic, cosy beach cottage. Big open fires and comfy couches, lazy days in the hammock, alfresco dining under the shade, incredible views of the turquoise lagoon. A piece of heaven in paradise.
What’s so special about it?
Churchhaven is off the beaten track and in a National Park…no modern trappings of life. Simple living in nature. It is so peaceful and big starry skies at night. Sun by day…and big blue skies and warm water to swim in…Days are lazy or spent playing in the water with boats!!
For you, what was the highlight of your stay/visit here?
Getting away from it all…no shops, no traffic, no people!!
What’s the local area like?
We had Johan deliver fresh fish, crayfish and oysters…too much for us to eat. It was a surprise as he usually delivers firewood…this was his gift to us.
Would you visit again? Or, if you have already, what was it like returning there for a second time – did it live up to the memory?
Each visit is as good as the last….Life is good and the living is easy!
