Michel Roux Jr was born in 1960 in Pembury, Kent, where his father Albert Roux worked as a private chef for the Cazalet family. His earliest food memories are the smells of the Fairlawne kitchen – pastry, sugar caramelizing and stews – where he played under the table while his father and mother Monique prepared the meals.
After deciding to follow in his father’s footsteps, he left school at 16 for the first of several challenging apprenticeships at Maître Patissier, Hellegouarche in Paris from 1976 to 1979. He was then Commis de Cuisine at Alain Chapel’s signature restaurant at Mionay near Lyon, Michel’s biggest influence.
His military service was spent in the kitchens at the Elysée Palace at the time of Presidents Giscard d’Estaing and François Mitterrand. He also spent time at Boucherie Lamartine and Charcuterie Mothu in Paris, and the Gavers Restaurant in London. After a stint at the Mandarin Hotel in Hong Kong he returned to London and worked at La Tante Claire before joining the family business.
He took over running Le Gavroche in 1991, gradually changing the style of cooking to his own – classic French with a lighter, modern twist. Michel opened Roux at Parliament Square in May 2010 with Restaurant Associates, part of the Compass Group UK and Ireland. And in November 2010, he opened Roux at The Landau at London’s prestigious luxury hotel, The Langham.
Michel has been a judge and presenter on the BBC’s popular prime time show, MasterChef: The Professionals, and a presenter on all three series of Great British Food Revival. Michel also recently fronted the highly anticipated return of BBC2’s Food and Drink and presented a documentary on Escoffier, whose revolutionary approach to fine cuisine has inspired Michel and many others.
He is also involved with the Roux Experience courses at the ‘Cactus Kitchens’ cookery school, with the Executive producer of Saturday Kitchen, Amanda Ross. Cactus Kitchens offers people the opportunity to learn to cook within small intimate groups from some of the UK’s finest chefs, on site above the Saturday Kitchen studios.
Michel is a keen sportsman and he ran his nineteenth marathon in 2013, to raise funds for VICTA, a charity supporting visually impaired children. He is also an honorary member of the Harlequins rugby club.
He had been one of our favorite chefs in our house and so inspiring.
First time for me in the supertheatre and certainly a buzz of excitement was starting as you could win a food processor, the presenter got the audience on there feet dancing trying to catch his eye for a chance to win. "wow" yes I know sure was getting excited when they announced Michel Roux Jr on. Video taken by me below.
Have to say was overwhelmed by seeing him and how he cooks was one of splender.
After this Millie my daughter took one look at the chocolate fountain and declared it was hers and wanted some bless her.

They had a huge selection of delicious truffles and yes I did get some well alot oppsss but well worth it.
I have bought from this stand so may times and on-line and they never fail in good cakes and flavor.
Sponge has been sold in our higgledy-piggledy Cafe since September 2000.
With our old school standards and eye for detail, fans were left open mouthed at the scale and flavor of the cakes. We realised there was a love affair going on.
In 2009 we took Sponge out of the comfort of their Byfords home, created a new look under the company name of SPONGE. We took our generous Sponges to county shows and received great feedback and the decision was made - we would go for it!
Much excitement, tastings, research and the usual good pinch of graft followed and here you have it. We are mad, crazy, bonkers about SPONGE and hope that you will absolutely love every mouthful.
Heading over to the signing area to see Michel Roux Jr and huge crowds wait in line to get his new book signed. My mission was to try and get a selfie with me and him but you was not allowed around the table so would of been very hard.
Outside in a marque they had a area for kids with lots of crafts to made which is very hand and good for the whole family.
So many good stalls selling fantastic produce very handy if you are into your cooking or baking.
Also you could go on into the gardens world which had some very interesting items to look and buy.
Goodie bags....Lots of exciting new food to try in these and have to say very impressed.
All in all in was a very good day at first it was a little too busy and especially if you have kids in buggy's can be hard but towards the end of the day that's when you get some good looking and shopping in.
Would sure go again as the show offers so much and next time even try to go without the kids hey you never know!
