This weekend I think I solved what was a huge design question mark/challenge for me. It’s actually a two part challenge 1) how to accessorize the top of the buffet–nothing I was doing seemed scale appropriate, and 2) how to maintain some privacy and somewhat block the the view outside of our dining room, which is not cute to say the least. It overlooks a side yard with trees we need to remove, a chainlink fence we need to replace, and the window of our neighbor’s laundry room.
See, not cute. Yes, I could just close the curtains, but I hate doing that because I feel like a shut in and want the bit of natural light that does come in through the 3 windows. And it also then looks like a wall of curtains–also not inspiring. So I hung a large print that we’ve had for years from the window sill.
I know some people knock the Keep Calm and Carry On prints as being overused, but we’ve had this one for a while and I love it (i.e. I don’t care what design snobs say and supported a small print studio by buying it). Plus, it’s a good reminder/motto for me personally, and we don’t have a lot of wall space, so the idea of hanging art on windows opens up a lot of options!
I think the large piece of art adds some much needed scale to the space and serves the dual function of also providing some privacy and something nice to look at while blocking the not-so-nice view but still letting light in. What do you think–success?
XO,
Heather
P.S. The buffet is from Z Gallerie from a few years ago, the print is from Keep Calm Gallery (they have very cool prints), the lamps are vintage with Target shades on them, and my zebra friend is a vintage find from eBay (inspired by this). The wallpaper is ‘Ferm Living’s Family Tree.”
