A Big Step: No More Training Wheels X 3

By Secondchancesgirl
Recently we experienced a huge moment in our household: on the same day, all  three kids learned to ride their bikes without training wheels. As a mom, this is the big moment between a baby and a full-blown big kid. This is a childhood must! Usually, this happens one by one, not in our home. JC insisted that everyone learn on the same day!

It was a Sunday afternoon and the sun had finally come out after a full day of rainstorms. The kids were driving us insane. We needed to get out of the house but had no idea what to do. We didn't want to be indoors at the movies or skating rink. The kids needed to go outside and run around. JC looked at his summer goals list and it said "teach kids to ride bike without training wheels" and the light bulb switched on! He told everyone to put on their sneakers and get ready to go to the park!
My brother happened to be home and decided to start teaching Adrian while everyone else was getting ready. This was a useless attempt because Adrian is as stubborn as can be. He was out there for 5 minutes before he threw his bike on the ground and gave up.

We piled all three bikes in the car and drove to the park. JC led the teaching session by having everyone start on the grass. He says it would hurt less when they fall on the grass. He was right. The kids didn't care about falling on the grass. It was harder to pedal though. The trick is to get them pedaling and give them a good push. With that start, they continue pedaling and don't fall. After about only 15 minutes of this, we moved onto the paved paths and the kids were pros!

Not going to lie, Adrian fell ALOT!

I really thought this would be a multi-day process, but no, they really got it in about 30 minutes and they were off. They rode around the park, through the grass and then up and down a couple ramps. Fearless kids, I tell you!

If you follow me on Instagram, you already saw a video of Gian riding his bike sans training wheels. I took video of Amberly and Adrian also.

Even I got in on the fun! I really need my own bicycle! Adrian laughed hysterically while taking this picture.

When we got home, Amberly was so excited to toss out the training wheels!

It was a wonderful afternoon but I did get a little sentimental thinking this is it, they are officially big kids!

Have you taught your kids how to ride bike without training wheels?
