A Bay On Fire

By Ingridd @cosytraveler

Lars had promised me something amazing. Something magical. After the lighting of the bonfire at Faxe Ladeplats and the sunset at our favorite beach, I could not imagine that I would see anything more beautiful.

Guess what? Lars was right, I was wrong. We drove to a small place called Strøby:

On the beach of Strøby, you have a splendid view of the Bay of Køge. Lars had spoken about this place ever since we met. He told me that at Sankt Hans Aften the whole bay “is on fire”. And it is. On every beach of this bay you could see bonfires. Big ones, small ones. It was simply breathtaking…

In the meantime, the colors of the sky had changed. The yellow was almost gone. The orange was still there, but was now accompanied by different hues of red and pink. The sun was touching the sea.

People were on the beach, looking at the bonfires, the sunset, the sea. Keeping an eye on their children. Drinking beer. Enjoying life and especially this occasion.

From Strøby, there is a quite narrow coastal road that takes you to Køge, a town about 40 kilometers to the south of Copenhagen. Lars had to drive slowly, since there were so many people on the road, walking from one bonfire to another, admiring the views and participating in the festivities. We stopped from time to time, watching and photographing.

Lars was right. This was truly magical. Even now, when I write about this, I still feel the excitement.

I will never forget this…
