Police have recovered the vehicle believed to be the vehicle that struck and killed a 9 year old boy last Thursday night in Cahokia, Illinois on Lorraine Drive near the intersection of Judith. The 9 year old boy was taken to SSM Cardinal Glennon Medical Center where he died on Saturday.

The vehicle was found Tuesday morning on Laclede’s Landing in St. Louis and authorities indicate they are looking for a 17 year old boy who is a person of interest.  Police want the 17 year old boy to come forward and answer some questions about the incident and say that he is not a “suspect” but a person of interest.

Hit and run accidents are troubling and people run for many reasons. Some drivers run out of a panic after they hit someone with their car.  It is a traumatic event to hit someone with your car especially if the victim is a child.  Other reasons for “running” include, use of alcohol, failure to have a valid license, failure to have insurance, and current warrants for arrest. Also, younger drivers may be more prone to running simply because of age and inexperience; however, leaving the scene of an accident only compounds the problem.

According to reports, it is not evident that the 17 year old person of interest was in fact driving the car that struck the 9 year old boy and he is still just a person of interest.  However, if you are driving and you are involved in an auto accident or a pedestrian accident, you should by all means stay with the victims and your vehicle until the police arrive.  Immediately call 911 after an accident. The moments that you spend wondering what to do can be moments toward saving a victim’s life by getting emergency assistance to the scene as soon as possible. Visit allinjuryattorney.com for our free car accident iPhone or Droid application called “Injury Attorney”  and/or download our “Accident Information Sheet” and print to put in your glove box  of your car.  The app and/or information sheet give helpful tips when you are in a crisis and cannot think clearly.

It is tragic when anyone is killed in an auto accident. We read about auto accidents fatalities daily in our papers and online and I think we become somewhat desensitized to it.  Being a personal injury attorney, I meet people daily whose lives have been changed due to a motor vehicle accident whether it is through serious/catastrophic injury or loss of a loved one.  Every time I get into my car, I think about my clients…..no choice. Their stories and experiences have a great impact on me and I hope that I am a more considerate driver because I know their stories of loss and pain.

Be a courteous driver—-not always easy to do as you have timelines and places to go, but remember, it just takes a few seconds of inattention to change your life.  Keep a look out in populated areas.  We tend to think that there will not be as many pedestrians out late at night, but it is the summer months and as the temperatures continue to heat up, many go out more in the evenings when it is cooler.  Slowdown in residential neighborhoods and observe all stop and yield signs.  Nothing is quite a life changing as being the cause of someone else’s injury or death.

If you have been in an auto accident or a pedestrian accident, you may need to consult an expert personal injury attorney regarding a possible  personal injury or wrongful death claim . Our attorneys understand there are many decisions and emotions to deal with following such a traumatic event.  Consultations with one of our attorneys can occur seven days a week, so call (800) 685-3302 or (314) 276-1681 for your free information
