8 Ways to Spruce Up Your Home Before Company Comes Over

By Upliftingfam @upliftingfam

I hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving and that you get to spend a ton of quality time with your family. I love the holidays because I am lucky to be able to spend quality time with my own children. We usually end up playing lots of video games and watching movies together. This time of year is usually super busy as you are trying to get your home ready for guests. Today, I wanted to share with you some easy ways to spruce up the house.

Clean Up the Clutter

The clutter just seems to pile up in our house even though we have tried our hardest. So when guests are coming over the first thing we do is tackle the clutter. Clutter can make a house look messy even if everything else is super clean. If you have time, now would be a perfect time to go through closets, dresser drawers, and bedrooms to get rid of things that you don’t need.

Dust

This is one those chores that I don’t really like doing because it always seems like it triggers a huge allergy attack for me even if I use a Swiffer duster to keep the dust from flying every where. I just need to invest in one of those masks so that I can dust without triggering an allergy attack or dose up on antihistamines first. However, when company is coming over you need to remember to dust areas that you might overlook during your routine cleaning schedule. Check for dust above doors, air returns, air vents, base boards, and doors. A thin layer of dust around various places in your house can give it a feeling that it is dirty.

Vacuum

Don’t forget to vacuum the carpets too. I always like doing this last because it never fails that my son dumps a bowl of cheerios on the floor or the dog decides to shred some paper.

Steam Clean

If I have enough time, I try to steam clean my carpets before company comes over so that they don’t see all of the stains that my child and dogs have made over the years. Plus, it makes it feel cleaner in my house because steam cleaning removes dirt and grim from the carpet.

Clean the Floors

I also leave the sweeping and mopping to the very end just in case my child decides to make a mess in the kitchen. There is nothing worse than having to clean up the floors multiple times before company arrives.

Don’t Forget to Change the Air Filter

Always change the air filter at least once a month depending on the type of HVAC system you have. This will help keep the dust under control and help remove allergens from the air. Plus, a dirty air filter will make your HVAC system run less efficiently too.

Wash the Guest Bedding

Has it been a while since anyone has slept in the guest bedroom? If so, you should take the time to wash and dry all of the bedding. This will help reduce the number of allergens in the room and plus who doesn’t like sleeping on freshly washed sheets that smell great. I know that I do. Don’t forget to put a few items in the guest bedroom that they might need. You can put things like cough drops, a box of Kleenex, bottle water, lotion, lysol spray, ect.

Bake Fresh Cookies

I love the smell of fresh baked cookies. Before your guests arrive, if you have time bake a some fresh baked homemade chocolate chip cookies. Fresh baked cookies always smells so much better than any air fresher that you could use to make your house smell good. I typically avoid using air freshener before company comes over because I don’t want to set someone’s allergies off.
