8 Most Common Causes for Urinary Incontinence

Finding the cause of bladder leakage can help you and your doctor determine the best and most effective treatment plan. Below are the 8 most common causes of urinary incontinence:

  1. Pregnancy and childbirth can put extra stress on the bladder and stretch and weaken the pelvic floor muscles.
  2. An enlarged prostate, or benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH), can put pressure on the urethra and block the flow of urine. Prostate surgery can damage the sphincter muscles in the urethra.
  3. Urinary tract infections (UTIs), more common in women, can irritate the bladder and cause strong urges to release urine. UTIs are easily diagnosed and treated, so be sure to see a doctor if you experience sudden, strong, or uncontrollable urges to pee.
  4. Damaged nerves by diseases and conditions, such as diabetes, spina bifida, and spinal cord injuries, can damage the nerve signals between the bladder and the brain. Neurological disorders, such as Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, dementia, and Alzheimer’s, can also affect bladder control.
  5. Obesity and excess weight adds extra pressure onto your bladder, which can cause it to leak urine.
  6. Smoking can lead to chronic coughing, which adds pressure onto the bladder and weakens its surrounding muscles.
  7. Low estrogen levels during menopause can cause vaginal tissues to become thinner, which can make the urethra less flexible and more at risk for infections.
  8. Certain foods and drinks (coffee, tea, and soda & citrus, acidic, and spicy foods) contain ingredients that can irritate the bladder or cause constipation.

With simple changes and proper treatment, urinary incontinence can be improved. Contact your doctor if you’re experiencing urinary leakage.
