If your love of animals transcends just looking after your own pet, then maybe you have thought of working with animals in some way. Whether as a volunteer or a career move, for the right person, there surely can’t be many jobs that are more fulfilling and rewarding than caring for animals.
1. Pet/House Sitter
This job needs no formal qualifications, merely a good honest character and a love of animals. You may be required to take out some form of insurance as you will be living in someone else’s home, so whilst the pay may be low, your living costs will be minimal.
2. Dog Walker
If you are to do this as a business then you need to have enough knowledge and experience to handle many different breeds with many different behaviors at the same time. If you want to do this in a voluntary capacity then you should limit the number of dogs you walk at any one time to a manageable number. This job will keep you fit as you will probably be walking for anything up to 8 hours a day.
3. Pet Groomer
This job will require some training, but it will bring you into close contact with a wide range of breeds of dog. If you choose to do this as a formal business, then you can either work from an adapted room in your home or purchase or rent a space for a salon.
4. Pet Masseuse
More and more people are seeing the benefits of massage for their pets and not just as a luxury treat. Many injuries and conditions associated with age can be eased through massage, making this job very rewarding indeed.
5. Kennel Hand
If you love working with dogs, then you could do worse than work in a dog kennel or if you prefer cats, why not try a cattery. There may be some entry level qualification required, however, some kennels appreciate some weekend and holiday assistance and whilst the pay may be negligible, meals are usually included so your expenses are minimal.
6. Volunteer in a Shelter
A truly rewarding way to work with animals, from dogs and cats to donkeys and horses, being a volunteer means there is no pay, however, the experience gained in working in this environment will set you in good stead if it is your intention to forge a career in animal care.
7. Animal Welfare Placement
These jobs are usual undertaken by students in their gap year and require a time commitment and a certain amount of self-funding. However there are placements available worldwide with a wide range of animals and marine life, which is excellent experience if you wish to have a career in animal husbandry.
