7 Reasons to Drink Wine When You Get Home

By Alexa Alfonso @lexlovescouture

Today is National Drink Wine Day! If you love having a glass of wine at the end of a long work day, you may be getting some great fringe benefits. In honor of what is officially our new favorite day of year, here are a few reasons why you should take a few sips of the good stuff when you get home tonight.

Anti-Aging

According to researchers at Harvard Medical School, red wine has anti-aging properties! Resveratrol which is found in the skin of red grapes is the beneficial compound.

Reduces Risk of Severe Sunburn

A study performed at the University of Barcelona stated that grapes have a compound (flavonoid) that can help protect skin from the harmful effects of UV rays. There are a whole bunch of scientific terms, but basically when the sun hits your skin the flavonoids undermine the process that leads to skin damage. This is isn't to say skip the sunblock on your next vacation, but maybe order a glass of wine to sip on after you have applied the sunscreen?

Keeps Your Mind Sharp

A study at Columbia University has shown that brain decline is much faster in non-drinkers than moderate drinkers. So, have a glass of wine! Your 80 year-old self will thank you!

Better Skin

Resveratrol can help slow down the growth of acne causing bacteria. The best part is that drinking the compound is the best way to get it beneficial effect. Topical creams and ointments have not been proven to be as effective. So basically you have to drink wine. You have no choice...

Cancer Prevention

Studies have shown that the antioxidants in both red and white wine can be helpful in preventing breast and lung cancer. Red wine has been found to be useful in preventing colon and prostate cancer as well.

Heart Health

According to John Folts, PhD of the University of Wisconsin -Madison, the antioxidants in red wine can keep your heart vessels flexible which will prevent unwanted clots that could lead to heart trouble. Again, this when it is consumed in moderation.

Slimmer Waistline

The compound resveratrol can help improve heart, brain, and muscle function in the same way a trip to the gym can as reported in a study done at the University of Alberta in Canada. Real Housewives and a glass of wine or being yelled at to do more squats by your trainer? Your choice.
