Earlier this month, the Obama Administration gave the green light to 7 large scale solar and wind projects on federal land. These installations have been expedited with the goal of producing roughly 5,000 megawatts of energy. This electricity generation will provide power to 1.5 million homes.

Located in Arizona, California, Nevada, and Wyoming, these projects represent regionally appropriate use of solar power, a key to clean energy. Under the president’s “We Can’t Wait” initiative, a public-private partnership aimed at revitalizing American manufacturing.

Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar was quoted as saying “‘These seven proposed solar and wind projects have great potential to grow our nation’s energy independence, drive job creation, and power economies across the west.’” Adding to the two dozen previously authorized projects, the administration has now approved permits for 31 utility-scale renewable energy installations.

Here are the seven latest projects:

  • Mohave Wind Energy (BP Wind) – Arizona
  • Quartzsite Solar Energy (Solar Reserve) – Arizona
  • Desert Harvest Solar Energy (enXco) – California
  • McCoy Solar Energy (NextEra) – California
  • Moapa Solar Energy Center (RES Americas) – Nevada
  • Silver State South (First Solar) – Nevada
  • Chokecherry/Sierra Madre Wind Energy (Power Company of WY)
