5 Ways to Prepare Your Home for Spring

Posted on the 04 March 2022 by Bboj Handyman

After a chilly few months the snowdrops, daffodils and crocuses are starting to appear and that means spring is here and the world feels renewed once more.

Spring is a critical time for property maintenance, with the warmer weather bringing with it different challenges to the freezing temperatures of the previous few months. And if you want to make the most of the sunshine come the summer, it is spring that you need to start laying the groundwork.

Here are four ways to help prepare your home for spring

1. Clear out your gutters

The red and yellow leaves of autumn will have found their way into your guttering over the last few months and will have been joined by other debris blow in there by Storm Eustice. The freezing and thawing of this material will have created a troublesome mulch that can cause havoc in your gutters unless you clear them out.

Dirty gutters look untidy, but more importantly if they are blocked rainwater may overflow and cause water damage elsewhere with leaks and flooding. Luckily, clearing them is relatively simple if you have a ladder, a small hand rake, and a hose and should take you no longer than an hour – or you can call your favorite handyman company for help if you don’t have the time or tools to do it yourself.

2. Redecorate with cheerful spring colours

Leave behind the dark greys and blues of the winter and pick some brighter and more cheerful colours for your spring redecoration plans. No matter the colour, a new coat of paint will make any room feel more fresh and bright, but pastel shades are ideal for interiors and create a cheerful but tasteful aesthetic that can work almost anywhere.

If you are struggling to find that perfect color for a room then why not get some expert advice from our team of skilled painters and decorators?

3. Refresh your workspace

Many of us have been working mostly or entirely from home for the last two years, and after so much time at the same desk in front of the same window it is probably time for a refresh.

It could be that you need to find a bigger desk to fit that extra monitor, or perhaps you would like some shelves put up nearby to hold your books and diary and keep your workspace clear. Whatever the changes you need, you could go hunting for that perfect piece of furniture at Alfies or Bermondsey Square antiques markets, you might want to get something unique crafted for your space by a trained carpenter, or you could source something more modern and minimal from Ikea. And if you need some help assembling that desk or putting up those shelves, then our odd job men are here to help.

4. Add life to your home with flowers and plants

Spring isn’t only about cleaning. It’s about growth and fresh starts, and flowers can add some natural beauty an color to any room whether it is some tulips from the local florist or some daffodils from your garden.

Plants are another way of bringing life and greenery into the home, and so if vases of flowers are not your style, why not treat yourself to a few new indoor plants, whether that is a one-metre-tall fiddle leaf fig or a pepper basket chili plant. Or, if floor space is at a premium in your London flat then why not try an indoor hanging basket with the leaves of a tradescantia flowing out the sides.

5. Get your garden ready for summer entertaining

It may still be too cold to dine alfresco right now, but that makes it the ideal time to lay some of the groundwork for a beautiful garden for the summer. Jet wash the patio, cut the grass, touch up the paintwork of any tired-looking garden furniture, and tidy up the flower beds to get things ready for when the weather is warmer and it is time to entertain.
