The tradition of cigars has been around for centuries and is said to have started with the Native Americans. Men have used cigars to celebrate an event or just to bond with others. Although it may have started with American Indians, seems as though all cultures of men find this a tradition that they would adopt. Here are a few traditions which you may or may not know.

Dating back to the 17th century when cigars were rare which began the tradition of new fathers passing out cigars in a celebration of the birth of a baby. It began with the birth of a son because they felt that a son brought value to the family, but has evolved to include the new birth of any child because they are all valuable. Part of the tradition has changed as thought processes change, but is still practiced to this day.

Men have used this tradition for many years to celebrate a promotion. Moving up the executive ladder in a company is a big deal and shows that you have value for the company, so only top quality cigars are used. It symbolized the respect that they commanded as they moved up the ranks.

Another tradition for cigars is buying a new home. It is said that it started by people who rent and couldn't smoke in their home. When they were able to buy a home it signified that since they owned their own home they could do whatever they wanted including smoking a cigar. This started when men were the sole bread winners and it was a celebration of them being able to buy a home for their family.

A special male bonding time is watching sports. If their team wins a championship or something like the Super Bowl, men light up a cigar in celebration of their team winning. Sharing a cigar after their sports team wins is their way of showing the happiness they feel after the win. The cigars are never lit until end and they know their team has won.

Another tradition with cigars is in business deals. Buying a business is a big deal which was sealed at the end of the deal with the smoking of a cigar. It was always sealed with only top quality cigars.

Although smoking has waned in the last few years there are still men who celebrate with a cigar. The tradition will be around as long as cigars are made.
