Have you ever dined in Didsbury?
Yesterday ‘5things’ dined at Chalk Bar and Grill in Didsbury, South Manchester. This modern and contemporary restaurant has been open for just over a year and is gaining popularity by the day. Chalk was busy and bustling – always a good sign. It’s been featured in The Times and has won accolades such as best newcomer in South Manchester in the eat, drink and sleep awards.

Choose a starter from the excellent eight on offer. These range from the exotic salt and pepper squid to the more traditional soup of the day served with artisan bread. We were quite tempted by the Confit Duck Leg With Hoi Sin Salad & Duck Crackling. The starters are all reasonable priced and start from about £5.00. We chose the liver parfait and the mushroom soup = both were excellent.

For main course we decided on the cheese and onion pie and the duck served with braised red cabbage. The cheese and onion pie was the nicest we’ve tasted and were pleasantly surprised to see it offered as a main – quite rare really. This was served with a lovely jacket potato and soured cream. The selection of main courses at Chalk are impressive with such things as slow roast game, mutton pudding and mushroom soufflé. Again all reasonably prices with the most expensive being £19. All mains could be complimented by a sides like roasted root vegetables or triple cooked chips.

For dessert we decided to try the treacle tart and the cheese board. The tart was served warm allowing the clotted cream to melt a little. We could have tried the ‘posh’ snickers! Desserts ranged from £1.75 for a scoop of ice cream to £7.25 for the melting chocolate fondant.
