My husband’s job is very unpredictable. Some days he’s gone from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. and somedays it’s earlier or later. Sometimes he works weekends and sometimes he has to be on call. It’s absolutely insane but he loves it… so I guess that’s all that matters, right?
But to keep my sanity as best I can, there are a few things I’ve done to make everyone’s life easier.
1) Get organized: I’m religious about writing things in my planner and making sure I know where everyone needs to be all of the time. From preschool, gym, and soon soccer, we are always coming and going. With everything going on, it’d be easy to forget what was going on that week. But because it’s written down, I’m able to plan far in advance as well as stay on top of things that need to be done.
2) Have reliable backups: There may be some days that Z isn’t going to be home and I have made plans to go somewhere. It’s important that I have multiple people I can call in case I’m in a bind and need help. Get a sitter, then get a back up. And maybe even another backup.
3) Snacks and meal prep: I won’t lie and say I have meals prepped for the entire week because I certainly don’t. But what I DO have prepped is what I’m going to make. Before going grocery shopping, I plan out exactly what I’m going to buy and what items I need. That way I’m not standing in front of the fridge trying to decide what to make. My husband doesn’t remember to bring a lunch all of the time (sigh…men) or make it home for dinner, so he’s stocked his work freezer with STOUFFERS® Fit Kitchen meals. They’re balanced and packed with 25 grams of Protein or more, so it keeps him satisfied longer.
4) Shower at night: If you can deal with showering at night, do it. It will save you a ton of time in the morning so you’re not worried about getting yourself AND your kids ready. Just a quick face wash to feel refreshed, some dry shampoo and you’re good to go! I am a huge fan of dry shampoo and a top knot… it’s done wonders for me and my mornings!
5) Pack your bag/purse the night before: There’s nothing worse than trying to get out of the house and having to run back in 3-4 times because you forgot the sunscreen. And the towels. And the diapers. If you pack everything the night before, you won’t have to be so frantic when you’re running late (which if you have kids, you probably are). I leave extra diapers, wipes, changes of clothes, etc in the car so that in case I forget those things, I’m still prepared! I also pack my husband’s lunch the night before but in case he forgets it at home, he’s got STOUFFERS® Fit Kitchen at the office.
Life can be crazy and it can cause us stress. But if we have somewhat of a plan or process in mind, it can make things a lot easier. And a lot more fun
