I am a firm believer in continuing education. This is true for anyone but it is especially important for those active in apologetics. Sometimes people know that they should go back to school but don’t know where to start. Here are some questions to ask yourself.
1. What are you hoping to do with your education? Are you seeking to teach in a university or seminary? Then pick your speciality and get the appropriate masters and doctoral degrees. Are you seeking to be a better apologist? Pick a degree that you are interested in, whether an apologetics degree or some related field.
2. Are you willing to move? If you are, go to the school that has the program you want. If not, look to seek if a local school has what you want or consider a distance education program.
3. What are you willing to spend? If you don’t have much money, consider a certificate program or look to a distance education degree as they can be cheaper.
4. What has worked for other apologists? You are not the first apologist looking for more education. Talk to your colleagues and find out what has worked for them.
5. Have you prayed about it? Ask God to lead you in the right direction. God is not likely to speak in an audible voice but he often provides direction. It may be that this is not the right time to go back to school. There may be an option that you have not thought of.
Bonus question: Have you spoken to your spouse on this? This is such a big decision with a cost of money and time. This is not a decision that you should make on your own. The joy of completing your degree will be much diminished if you have damaged your family relationship.
