Welton Becket's 1955 New York Life Insurance Company Building in Los Angeles had undergone a series of less-than-faithful additions by the time architects Chava Danielson and Eric Haas were tasked with transforming it into a contemporary school, but the duo saw potential. “There’s a great deal of smart planning and environmental sensitivity to this building, which is exactly what contemporary architects are talking about,” Haas says. Today the space houses the humming Larchmont Charter High School.
