Seasonal Fruits and Veggies to Try

There are many flavorful fruits and vegetables in season for fall & winter. Some of which include pineapple, brussel sprouts, cauliflower, kale, beets, carrots, pears, cilantro, parsnip, onions, limes, mango, ginger, radishes, raspberries, pumpkin, spinach, celery and apples are in season right now, and any of these can be used to make tasty detox drinks.

We chose a few of these healthy ingredients and created

5 must try refreshing drinks that fit right into your healthy life.

Use Your Imagination

Feel free to adapt the following recipes, switching one fruit for another, or a vegetable for a similar variety. You can also add unusual ingredients such as fresh ginger, herbs or even chili for extra flavor.

So head to your local farmers’ market and choose some wonderful organic produce, so you can get started making some scrumptious and refreshing drinks that are sure to please! You will not be disappointed.

Let’s dive right into our refreshing drink recipes:

 Zingy Spinach and Citrus Smoothie

This nutritious blend of avocado, lemon, lime, spinach and apple is further enhanced with a splash of apple cider vinegar if you have some in the cupboard.

You can also add a little raw honey or liquid stevia for sweetness if you want. Feel free to swap the spinach for kale or even something sweet like pineapple or strawberries for a totally different flavor. A little sweet fresh basil works well in this one too.

You will need a blender to make this recipe, and every kitchen should have a good blender. This recipe is best when you add ice so ensure you are using a blender which can handle ice. Use freshly squeezed lemon and lime juice for the best flavor and also for the most health benefits.

The avocado adds a nice creamy texture to the smoothie, making it seem more like an indulgence than a health drink. This is delicious at any time of the day. Try it for breakfast to give your digestive system a kick start, enjoy it with your lunch or treat yourself to this flavorful smoothie mid-afternoon for a refreshing pick-me-up.

This recipe makes 2 small servings or one large one.

What You Need:

1 cup cold water

1 cup ice cubes

1/2 avocado

Juice of 1/2 lemon

Juice of 1/2 lime

2 cups fresh spinach

1 unpeeled, cored, quartered green apple

1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar (optional)

How to Make It:

Put all the ingredients in your blender, then blend on a high setting until smooth. Serve right away for the best results.

 Mango and Carrot Cocktail

Carrots are naturally sweet and of course so are mangoes. Here we are blending the goodness of both, along with some lime juice to add a bit of zing. This is a very easy drink to make, since you simply have to put the ingredients in your blender and blend for a few seconds.

Expect a brightly colored drink which is wonderful at any time of the day. Although you can use frozen mango, we prefer to use fresh ripe mango. If you are using frozen mango though, swap the ice for additional water since the drink will be cold enough. Something else you could do is swap the mango for peach. The end flavor will be similar.

Not only does this mango and carrot cocktail offer a rich, sweet flavor, but it also boasts more than 250% of your daily vitamin A requirement and 100% of your vitamin C requirement! It is high in dietary fiber, potassium and vitamin B6. This is a great cocktail (or mocktail) for the grownups but why not make it for the kids too, especially kids who are usually picky about eating carrots. Trust me, they will love this as much as you do!

What You Need:

1/2 cup cold water

1/2 cup ice

1 cup peeled, chopped mango

2 peeled chopped carrots

2 tablespoons fresh lime juice

 How to Make It:

Put all the ingredients in your blender and blend until smooth, then serve immediately.

Tropical Smoothie with a Pepper Kick

Sometimes it’s nice to try something totally different, and that was our inspiration for this mouthwatering drink. We are using mango, orange, tomato and banana to make it, along with either horned melon or passion fruit. Horned melon, also known as kiwano or melano, is a golden orange fruit with seeds. If you can’t get one, passion fruit pulp is also good in this drink.

It is your choice whether to use hot chili or sweet pepper in this, and it depends whether you want a spicy zing or a touch of sweetness in there. If you do want to use hot chili, make sure you wash your hands in hot, soapy water after preparing it. Accidentally touching your eye after preparing chilies is never fun!

This exotic smoothie is easy to make, and you will need your trusty blender to prepare it. The golden orange color is sure to whet your appetite and this drink has so many wonderful vitamins and minerals in there. Treat yourself to something which not only tastes amazing but is also really good for you.

What You Need:

1 peeled, chopped mango

2 peeled oranges in segments

1 chopped banana

1 chopped fresh tomato

Flesh of 1 horned melon or seeds of 2 passion fruits (optional; great adaptation for summer)

1/2 cup cold water

1/2 cup ice cubes

1 teaspoon seeded hot chili pepper or 1/4 cup sweet pepper

How to Make It:

Put the mango, orange, banana and tomato in a blender and then go ahead and add the horned melon or passion fruit pulp if using.

Next, pour in the water and add the ice cubes, then add either hot chili pepper for a spicy kick or sweet pepper if you don’t want the heat. Blend until smooth, then drink right away.

 Fruity Berry Belly Slimmer

Everyone knows about the important of drinking water while detoxing but, let’s face it, water isn’t exactly an exciting drink, is it? Once you start adding things to it though, the calories usually go up and it becomes more of a treat than a detox drink. However, opt to add fresh fruit to your water, along with perhaps vegetables and fresh herbs, and you have the perfect solution – a drink that is good for you and helps you detox, and contains barely any calories but boasts plenty of flavor!

This recipe shows you how to make a delicious mixed berry detox water. You can use any kind of fresh berries you like, preferably the organic kind from your local farmer’s market or your own home-grown produce. There are many kinds of berries to choose from, including strawberries, blackberries, red currants, raspberries, blueberries and more, and a lot of people like to add various colors of berries to the drink for more visual interest.

We suggest using 2 cups of water for every cup of berries, but you can adjust these amounts if you want. You can keep topping up the water throughout the day, as you drink cups of this, and the delicious berry flavor will remain in the drink. Some people like to add ice to this while others don’t want to have it that cold. That is completely your choice.

So be kind to your body and give it a break from your usual coffee or soda. Sipping on this fruity detox drink is sure to do your body a real favor and help you shed those excess pounds and keep healthy and hydrated.

What You Need:

6 cups purified water

2 cups fresh berries (eg: strawberries, blueberries, red currants, raspberries)

Ice cubes (optional)

How to Make It:

Put the berries into a large pitcher and add the berries. The longer you let this mixture sit the more pronounced the berry flavor will become. You might like to add ice if you are not keeping it in the refrigerator, and you can keep topping up the ice (and water) as you drink it. The berry flavor will still be there!

Rainbow Citrus Detox Water

The rainbow of colors you get from this citrus and watermelon detox water looks so appealing you will want to keep sipping on this colorful, delicious drink, topping up the water whenever it is running low. The great thing about detox water is it is virtually calorie-free (and of course carb-free and fat-free) so you don’t have to limit yourself. Simply switch plain water for detox water, and you can expect not only a wonderful taste but also plenty of nutrients and antioxidants from the fruit.

Detox water is always a healthy drink whether you are relaxing in the spa (which is incidentally the first place many people experience detox water), just back from the gym or a yoga session, sitting at home, working, or in fact any time. This drink will help you stay hydrated and it will also help to detox your body.

Anything which encourages you to drink water is a good thing, and for sure adding plenty of yummy fruits to it is going to make you want to take frequent sips. The vitamin C, potassium and antioxidants in detox water are also great for your health. This recipe uses watermelon which is very sweet, mandarin which is also sweet and lime to add a tart edge which balances out the flavor perfectly.

Some people like to add a few strawberries too, which is fine. You can top this up a few times, making it an economical beverage as well as a very healthy one. As long as it tastes good, keep sipping, although it’s best to prepare a new one each day rather than keeping it overnight, to keep the flavor super-fresh.

What You Need:

6 cups purified water

1/2 cup lime slices

1 cup mandarin segments

1 cup chopped watermelon flesh

4 strawberries (optional)

Fresh mint, for garnish (optional)

How to Make It:

Put the lime slices in a pitcher. Now add the mandarin segments and finally the chopped watermelon. You can also add a few strawberries if liked.

This is already an impressive-looking detox water but you could a fresh mint sprig to make it even prettier if liked. This drink is best left in the refrigerator for a couple of hours before drinking, so you can really taste all the delicious flavors in it.

Tips for Perfect Fresh Detox Drinks

Always choose fresh ingredients whenever possible. Although a splash of bottled lemon juice is better than no lemon juice at all, you really can’t beat fresh. If some of the ingredients are out of season or not available where you are, you can simply switch them for others.

That’s the great thing about juices, smoothies and detox waters actually – they allow you to be creative and mix and match ingredients. Taste the drink before serving to see whether it needs more sweetness, which you can add in the form of raw honey or liquid stevia, a little more citrus or perhaps some extra water or fresh juice if it’s too thick.

So Many Fresh Ingredients to Choose From

If you are making detox water, you might be surprised how few ingredients you need, perhaps trying cucumber and mint for a yummy spa water type drink, or sticking with just one fruit, such as orange or strawberries, for a hint of flavor. You can keep topping the detox water up because the fruit flavor will last.

With smoothies and juices, it’s best to enjoy them right away before the ingredients separate, but with detox water, you will find one large pitcher lasts all day so make plenty!

It’s easy to become dehydrated when the weather is warm, so if you are getting tired with your usual beverages, try some of our yummy drinks and discover new ways to tempt your taste buds and get extra nutrients into your diet.

Have fun with these recipes and remember you can get creative and throw in any tasty seasonal produce for your own brand new twist on the flavor!
