In the 1980s and 1990s, the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) had on-air women who made the industry look chic. These ladies regularly anchored the station’s flagship newscast at 9:00 p.m., the NTA network news.

Many people have been curious as to the whereabouts of these women ever since they mysteriously disappeared from NTA. Some of these media innovators have been busy since leaving NTA, and Johnniepen details their incredible achievements.

1. Bimbo Oloyede.

A lot of the older people who watched the NTA Network News on Nigerian TV were looking forward to hearing Bimbo Oloyede’s soothing voice. In April of 1976, Bimbo Oloyede made her radio debut. Between 1976 and 1980, she presided over the 9 p.m. newscast.

Bimbo Oloyede founded the WODEF (Women Optimum Development Foundation) in 1999 and currently serves as its president.

2. Siene Allwell-Brown.

In the ’70s and ’80s, Siene Allwell-Brown was a well-known fashion model. Sienne was revered as a leading expert in her field, and her refined aesthetic was adored by everybody.

Some women were envious of Sienne’s excellent style when she was a newscaster. In light of this, numerous ladies watched the evening news in the expectation of seeing cartoon versions of her most recognizable features. Many young women still look up to Siene as an example of a trailblazer in the industry of television reporting.

3. Ruth Benamaisia-Opia.

Ruth Benamaisia-Opia is another one of NTA’s news heroes, and she’s wonderfully charming. She endeared herself to the millions of Nigerians who watched her newscasts on television.

Ruth Benamaisia-Opia has been cited as an inspiration by a number of today’s young female newscasters. With her stunningly beautiful looks, fans were always craving more of her on-screen appearances.

4. Eugenia Abu.

Eugenia Abu, the lovely and brilliant anchor of NTA’s 9 p.m. newscast for 17 years, retired in 2016. After beginning her career at Radio Benue in Makurdi, NTA was the next logical step for Eugenia, now 59 years old.

For aspiring Nigerian writers and artists, Eugenia Abu launched the Eugenia Abu Media Center in 2018.
