5 Books Every Young Apologist Should Read

By Sjbedard @sjbedard

Apologists are spoiled when it comes to apologetic material. The problem is not finding enough but knowing where to start. What kind of books should a person just getting into apologetics read? Here are some suggestions.

1. Mere Christianity by C. S. Lewis. This is the classic book on apologetics. The reason you need to read it is not just for the information but for the example of how a Christian layperson engaged an unbelieving world on the truth of Christianity.

2. Reason for God by Timothy Keller. This is a great book on apologetics as it comes from a pastor’s heart. This is not just an academic discussion but an engagement with real people.

3. Tactics by Greg Koukl. This is one of the best books out there on how to engage in dialog with people who disagree with you. You should read this every year.

4. How to Talk to a Skeptic by Donald Johnson. This book bridges the gap between the basics of apologetics and the practical ways to have discussions. The author presents from his own experiences.

5. Cold-Case Christianity by J. Warner Wallace. This book is unique in that presents Christianity through the perspective of a cold-case detective. Using methods of legal evidence, the author shows that Christianity is true beyond a reasonable doubt.

There are more apologetics books out there. But if you are just starting out, this is a good place to start. By the time you have finished reading these books, you will be much better prepared to provide a reason for the hope that is within you.
