48 Hours in Phuket

Posted on the 10 May 2019 by Violet Cowells @violetsvoyage

Everyone dreams of a tropical holiday; bursting with sun, sand, and sea, at only a quarter of the price expected. Well look no further, because Phuket is calling for you. A cluster of glittering blue waters, pure white sand, and a bustling nightlife. Not yet convinced? I spent 48 wonderful hours in this bustling wonderland, and found the best things you can do during your time here, regardless whether it’s a week long escapade or a day long stopover.

Be a Beach Bum

Dreaming about sunbaking along silky smooth sand strip as the nearby blue waves soothe you into a slumber? Phuket’s many beaches are just the ticket. You can choose between the city’s most popular Patong Beach, packed with lounge chairs, on the beach restaurants, and crowds of tourists. Or visit the quieter beaches which’ll take you a trek to get to but will be well worth once you enjoy the strip of sand all to yourself.

Visit the Big Buddha

As one of Phuket's most important landmarks, the Big Budda is defiantly a necessary. The huge, 45-metre-tall structure sits on top of the Nakkerd Hills, right between Chalong and Kata, and can be seen from as far away as Phuket Town. Hop on a tour, a bus, or hire a car, and take the signature big budda tourist photo to make your Instagram followers jealous!

Go Trekking

Nature lovers will want to skip the city streets and main beaches, and head straight for the lush greenery. I headed to the Kathu Waterfall which delivered the promise of a beautiful waterfall with a spectacular view. Make sure to bring some good walking shoes as the path is full of large rocks to hop over and fallen logs in your path. There are many more than just this one, including Khao Sok National Park and Bang Pae Waterfall just to name a few.

Get Rowdy at Bangla Road

Phuket is not only known for its relaxing day activities but has a big reputation for being a party city once the sunsets. The main street to head to is Bangla Road, which is lined with bars, clubs, ping pong shows, and more! The night is filled with bright, fluro lights and pounding music, offering you and your friends the perfect night out to remember (or not depending on its success). However, local sellers crowd the street trying to drag you into their club, so be wary not to be sucked into a bad deal.

Try the Local Food

There is more than Pad Thai on the menu here! With countless street shops and restaurants offering mouth-watering cuisines freshly cooked right in front of you! Slurp down some dumplings, taste the melting pot, or eat your weight in coconut.

See blood at the Bangla Boxing Stadium

Muay Thai fighters are celebrities in Phuket, with fighters starting from a young age, and going all the way up to the top adult fighters in the country. You can see these professionals fight it out in person, visiting one of the local stadiums on fight night. Enjoy a beer and scream along with the tourists and locals who are cheering beside you.
