It’s easy to side with the designated bad guys in a movie. Cue malevolent music, make the villain a bit ruddy and ugly, cast a gorgeous actor as the main character, and there you have it - good vs. evil. When you really think about it, though, not every film scoundrel and miscreant deserves the title. Some of them are just following human nature and it’s us who are wrong.
1. Edward Rooney in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off
Edward Rooney was the Dean of Students at the high school in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. When he suspected Ferris of bailing for an entire day, he tried to chase him down to prove that he was, in fact, skipping school, and not sick. Can you blame Mr. Rooney, really? Maybe if you’re still a high school student you can, but not if you’re a professional who takes his job seriously. Mr. Rooney was simply doing what was expected of him as an education professional, and frankly, he was doing it well. Students have the entire weekend off to dance on floats and steal their friend’s father’s sports car - there’s no need to be greedy and take a mid-week break. Plus, Ferris was actually skipping school, so Mr. Rooney was right, whether you like it or not.
2. The Machines in The Matrix
Let’s not forget that humans created the “villainous” machines in The Matrix, making this movie a common case of being careful what you wish for. Obviously, nobody wanted the machines to begin harvesting people for energy, but it happened anyway. And from the machines’ point of view, can you blame ‘em? First, the machines were slaves to humans. Then, they smartened up and decided that they didn’t want to live a life of servitude anymore. So, since the machines were no longer good for the humans, they started killing their creations. To reinstate peace, the machines lived amongst themselves in the desert. What did the people do? They continued killing the tranquil machines. What choice did the machines have?
3. The Wicked Witch of the West from The Wizard of Oz
Now, how bad could the Wicked Witch of the West be if they wrote a book and a play about her? Sure, she’s green and ugly. She tormented our four friends as they skipped along the yellow brick road. But really, the girl is just acting out. Here’s why: Dorothy dropped a house on the Wicked Witch’s sister, killing her. Then, that farm girl stole the dead witch’s shoes, which should have rightfully been given to the bad witch. Also, think about it - all the Wicked Witch of the West wanted were the shoes! She didn’t want domination over Oz. She didn’t want Dorothy’s soul. Just shoes. Now what girl can’t relate to that?
4. The Three Hyenas in The Lion King
It’s a little hard for any 90s kid to not side with Simba in The Lion King, because he was voiced by heartthrob Jonathan Taylor Thomas, at least until the pre-pubescent lion’s voice changed. The hyenas did kinda got the short end of the stick, though. They were banished to an elephant graveyard, which clearly didn’t have the food necessary to keep three appetites at bay. They were hungry and they were willing to do whatever it took to not be hungry. It’s that simple - it’s the circle of life.
