About 150 people showed up yesterday to symbolically blockade railroad tracks in Seattle in a demonstration against fossil fuel extraction and export.

Especially controversial have been the “bomb trains,” exploding oil trains taking crude from the Bakken Shale region to export terminals and refineries.

Coal terminals have also been proposed in the Pacific Northwest to increase fossil fuels exports from the Powder River Basin.

This was the second time activists in Seattle have symbolically blocked the train tracks. The first time came last November, when more than 600 protestors joined in a day of action, during which more than 200 protests in 48 states across the US came together to protest fossil fuel extraction and infrastructure.

350seattle.org declared yesterday, “Thanks to all who came out to our second oil-train protest; we had about 150 people, a gorgeous day (if, um, a little….warm), and excellent speakers. We’ll link to video when it’s available. Watch here and stay in touch for direct action possibilities this summer…. warrior up!”
