2020 Juno Award Winners, Performances, and More

By Phjoshua @thereviewsarein

After COVID-19 caused the cancellation of the traditionally planned 2020 Juno Awards show in Saskatoon, organizers, performers, presenters, and the entire Canadian music industry had to pivot and come up with a new plan. So on Monday, June 29, the Junos went with plan b, a streamed show with performances, dedications, and of course, awards.

Was this the same extravaganza as it would have been as the SaskTel Centre, no. But, the Juno Awards show that we got did an excellent job of celebrating Canadian music, musicians, and the industry that gives us so much entertainment and love. We applaud every person involved with the show for their hard work, ideas, and ability to pull it off. Well done.

Winners across 42 award categories were announced on Monday night, including Alessia Cara who won three awards (Album of the Year, Pop Album of the Year, Songwriter of the Year) and Shawn Mendes (Artist of the Year, Single of the Year) and Tory Lanez (Rap Recording of the Year, R&B/Soul Recording of the Year) who each won two awards.

We offer our congratulations to all of the winners and nominees, and you can see the full list of all 41 categories a little further down in this post.

But first, some music!

There weren't as many performances as they would have been at a traditional show, and that's a bummer. But, the performances we saw from The Dead South, Neon Dreams, and iskwē were wonderful and represented what we love about Canadian music. The talent, the diverse sounds and genres and artists, and the creativity that flows through them all.

Check out the performance videos in these tweets from CBC Music.

We're sad that we didn't get the full on production and show that a non-CODID-19 world would have given us, but we're proud of the show we saw and the music that was celebrated.
