Only a few days left of 2016, and we can’t wait to see what 2017 has in store! To round up our final 2016 recap, here are some artists we are excited to hear more from in the new year.
Alex Marshall: A favorite of ours here at MCU, Marshall is the former pianist for The Cab who has made headway with his solo project this year. He released two singles and a music video for “Hurricane,” as well as hosting an album release party in New York. The album is ready to go, we’re just waiting for that green light in 2017.
Bishop Briggs: This year, the UK singer songwriter’s viral debut, “Wild Horses,” reached #1 on Spotify’s US Viral Chart and #2 on Spotify’s Global Viral 50 charts. She also recently released the video for “Wild Horses,” which you can watch here. The rising star also had two television performances on Late Night with Seth Meyers and The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Earlier this month, we saw Bishop Briggs open for Bastille and The 1975 at the Pandora Holiday show. She doesn’t have an album out just yet, but hoping we have a full length in the new year.
Alessia Cara: After landing a spot opening up for British alt-rock mainstays Coldplay on their Head Full of Dreams Tour in 2016, Alessia Cara was destined to become a household name. What started off as an acoustic cover channel on YouTube has led the Canadian singer-songwriter to be named Breakthrough Artist of the Year at the 2016 Juno Awards, a single, “How Far I’ll Go” in Disney’s Moana movie, and appearances on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon and honored with the “Rule Breaker” Award at the Billboard Women in Music 2016. With all of these awards and accolades at the mere age of 20, Alessia can’t even celebrate with an adult beverage yet, but here’s a cheers to her very likely fruitful musical career in 2017.
Pinegrove: The New Jersey indie rock/folk band consists of members who met when they were seven years old, and with their personal lyrics and warm-hearted sounds, you can consider them your new lifelong friends. You know a band is legit when they’ve got an NPR Tiny Desk Series concert, and you can check that off the bucket list for these New Jersey natives. Their 13-minute-set is inspiring and sure to leave you fans of Pinegrove if you haven’t already hopped on the wagon. All aboard, 2017 is forecast to be the year of the underdogs.
Maggie Rogers: Okay, she was already mentioned in our highlights of 2016, but Maggie’s debut EP, “Now That The Light is Fading” will be dropping in February and we’re excited to hear it! She will also be embarking on her first North American headlining tour so it’s safe to say we’ll be seeing a lot of Maggie Rogers in 2017.
Coast Modern: This LA duo has hit the scene hard- playing their first ever show this year at SXSW at the Perez Hilton party. They quickly gained a big following with their releases getting a ton of attention on blogs, and have been featured on several Spotify playlists. They have toured with Borns and Temper Trap and are gearing up for a big release in 2017.
