It's finally time to announce the big winner for our Public Service Scholarship! The final winner will receive $500. We want to give a huge thank you to all the applicants and the time they put into gathering the information necessary to apply. We wish we could give everyone money to help them in their educational pursuits. It took time and effort to whittle down to the single most outstanding applicant.

Public Service Scholarship Winner: Sarah Hanif
Sarah is an engineering student at Cornell University, and and is interested in pursuing her MD/PhD in order to contribute to sustainable medical technology in developing countries, as well as practice Medicine in low income areas. Her extracurricular activities include "Engineers Without Borders" and music (piano, guitar).
Here is an excerpt from her essay:
"I would describe myself as a tinkerer. I am fascinated by how things work and the science and math that is integrated in the development of everyday objects. In the past few years I have built my own gumball machine, electromagnetic Morse code system, and several robots! I am very fortunate because my interests and hobbies are directly related to the field I would like to pursue: engineering.
My parents immigrated to the United States with the hope that I would one day utilize my education to improve society and give back to my community. When I began to study physics, I realized that I could join an organization called "Engineers Without Borders" and visit developing nations as a college student. As an engineer, I could use equations and formulas to make real improvements in the lives of thousands of people abroad. The mere idea of such a career was eye-opening!
My participation in Engineers Without Borders began in the fall of 2014, when I was accepted to a project whose aim was to build a bridge and water sanitation system in a rural agricultural village in Bolivia. Working on such a profound project at just the start of my college experience made me realize how much potential I had to make a real difference in the quality of life of an entire village. This realization motivated me to continue to seek opportunities as well as a career through which I could continue to leave my mark in beneficial ways."
