I’m enjoying trying the new SCN offerings like this 2008 Single Cask Nation Glentauchers 8 years because I’m getting to try distilleries I haven’t spent much time getting to know. Which truly is the beauty of independent bottlers, they often source off the beaten path and can find gems that might have otherwise been overlooked. Even if you don’t end up liking the whisky it’s a whole new experience to add to your mental catalog.
In Single Cask Nation’s Words: Single Cask Nation Glentauchers 8 years
“This cask bottling, distilled in May 2008, spent eight years maturing in a refill ex-Oloroso sherry hogshead. It was bottled at cask strength in September of 2016 at 56.7% ABV. Cask #900250 yielded 252 bottles.
Sweet and spicy with pleasing warmth, the spicy/malty nose gives way to rich fruit and dark chocolate on the palate, before transitioning into a satisfying finish.”
Founded in 1898 the Glentauchers distillery’s main function as been as a blending malt in whiskies like Teacher’s, Buchanan’s and Ballantine’s, though not as a core malt, more as a filler. Which is readily apparent why after tasting the 2008 Single Cask Nation Glentauchers 8 years which we’ll dive into more in the review below.

OVERALL
2008 Single Cask Nation Glentauchers 8 years is a VERY sweet whisky, which usually I don’t like, but there’s enough of an earthy malty presence that helps even it out a bit. Water helps on the aroma and brings more of that nice dark sherry presence along with a bit more spice. Though on the palate water knocks up the sweetness another notch and some vanilla and toffee appear.
If you like super sweet whiskies this 2008 Single Cask Nation Glentauchers 8 years would be right up your alley and could be your new best friend. If you don’t like super sweet whiskies or look for more balance in your whisky then check out some of the SCN Ben Nevis offerings.
