Heyyyy readers. Hope everyone is preparing to brave the heat that's about to hit the northeast. My suggestions would be swim as much as you can, put ice cubes on your neck, eat popsicles, and go to museums and movies. Often. Preferably multiple museums and multiple movies in one day. Or you could just lie on the relatively cool tiles of a bathroom floor and sweat. But in the meantime, here are 10 Things for the weekend. They're not really related to the weekend, or to anything, but they are, as you may guess, 10 things I like. So that should count for something. Enjoy (after the jump).
1. Bleached out Polo from Brooklyn Dry Goods
I recently went golfing with a friend, and as I prepared to hit the links, realized the only collared shirts I own are from when I worked at the Rockport Boat Club and they all say "Instructor" on them. They're also a little grungy. I solved the sartorial problem by stealing one of my dad's Patagonia collared shirts, but it was a pretty big on me and I think I looked a little ridiculous. The shirt above would have come in very handy; it would have been a nice curve ball to show up in this at the very proper golf club to which my family belongs. Next time.
2. Embroidery of the New York Times
Christine Mitchell, of the blog N'East Style, tweeted about these beautiful muslin pieces by the artist Lauren DiCioccio. I love how she leaves the threads on the work so it looks unfinished, and only embroiders some of it. What a talented woman, look at that needlework!
3. The song 1997 by Saint Motel
I found this on Sunset in the Rearview (duh) and can't stop bopping around to it. Great summer driving song.
4. Walnut wood iPhone case
My case just cracked, so I'm in the market for a new one. I might have to devote a whole post to that search soon, but in the meantime, this one is pretty nice.
5. Golf
A broad "thing" to like, but as you can maybe tell from the polo-shirt issues in #1, I've been playing a fair amount of golf this summer. Which is weird, because I always thought that I a) hated it and b) was really bad at it. Turns out I actually really enjoy it, and I'm not that terrible. I mean, yes, I'm still a few strokes away from the PGA tour, but I can connect with the ball on most swings. An improvement on years past.
I also would like to take this opportunity, while we're on the subject of golf, to quote the movie Caddy Shack:
"It's easy to grin When your ship comes in And you've got the stock market beat.
But the man worthwhile Is the man who can smile When his shorts are too tight in the seat."
Unrelated (a theme, this week, it seems), but really, really good.
6. Tanner Goods Linen Notebook
Always on the lookout for a good notebook. This is a good notebook.
7. Blackberry Gin Fizz via Smitten Kitchen
Because this looks the ideal, the most perfect, the favorite-est, best drink I've ever come across. Making it tonight. Don't care that I have neither blackberries nor the inclination to boil them down into my own syrup. It will happen.
8. Hershel Supply Co. Backpack via Need Supply
It's my favorite color, it's simple, it's got a sweet label, and those leather straps? I'm sorry, but it's almost too good to be true.
9. Book review of the new book on Superman via The New York Times
Excuse me for going a little New York Times heavy on this week's 10 things, but I got such a kick out of this review of James Tye's new book written by James Parker. Namely because of the ending of the article: "Superman will be 75 next year, and his barrel is apparently bottomless. Mighty, solitary, wearing his underpants on the outside as if in an endless anxiety dream, he flies on."
10. Mildred Apron via Anthropologie
Because I recently wore an apron:
And I liked it.
Happy weekend. Stay cool.
