The NCL CIL exam will have two stages whose exam pattern is given below.

- Mechanical Engineering: Thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid mechanics, machine design, power plants, boilers, material science, etc.
- Electrical Engineering: Electrical circuits, machines, power systems, control systems, electronics, instrumentation, etc.
NCL CIL Assistant Foreman syllabus for Section B:
- General Knowledge: Current affairs, Indian history, geography, polity, economy, science, etc.
- General Awareness: Sports, culture, literature, famous personalities, etc.
- Reasoning: Verbal and non-verbal reasoning, analytical thinking, problem-solving, etc.
- Verbal & Mental Ability: Grammar, vocabulary, comprehension, sentence completion, etc.

For average 55-60% for the General category, and 50-55% for SC/ST categories.
