[Happy International Women's Day!]
I’ve had Facebook for almost seven years (whoa…I didn’t realize it was that long) and I’ve uploaded countless megabytes of photos & videos, exchanged thousands of messages, and had tons of people write on my wall. Recently I’ve been thinking about how I could get all of my information from Facebook in case I ever (probably wouldn’t) ever (definitely won’t) wanted to deactivate my account without painstaking single-file downloads.
I was in luck.
Facebook has recently released a new feature that allows you to;
“…lets you download a copy of your information, including your photos and videos, posts on your wall, all of your messages, your friend list and other content you have shared on your profile.”
It’s quite easy actually. Log in to your account (I won’t explain how to do that), click on the Account button in the top right corner, and then head over to the Account Settings page. Once you get to this page you’re well on your way. Look for the text “Download Your Information” and click the Learn More link. This is where they tell you what you’ll get once you click the download button. Are you sure you want to prance down the memory lane of your Facebook? You’re probably dying with curiosity so click Download. There’s a brief (10-30 minutes) waiting period dependent solely on the amount of ‘stuff’ you’ve entrusted with the site. Once your information is ready the good folks over in Palo Alto will send you an email with a link to a zip file containing all of your information.
Even if you’re not looking to close your account it might be fun to explore your life according to Facebook. If you decide to try it out, let me know what you find!
