"Guitar groups are on their way out, Mr Epstein." That's what a Decca executive supposedly told the manager of The Beatles after they had failed to impress him with their audition on January 1st, 1962. Since then the death of the electric guitar as a major instrument has been announced many, many times again. And while they don't sound like anything the Fab Four ever recorded Belgian noise dance rock sextet Statue take the six string instrument to its rightful place in the spotlights. In fact it's get a little crowded in there with not one, not two, not three, but four guitarists, relying on a single drummer and bass player to keep them grounded and in sync.
Their third album Kasper is a hard-hitting mix of Nine Inch Nails, Sonic Youth, New Order and even Television. The nine instrumentals whizz and purr, growl and moan, dance and jump with barely a chance to catch your breath. It's a trip into the dark, uncharted backwaters of repetitive, sparse and sometimes surprisingly melodic noise that can drive an audience into a frenzy. Those who can't stand the heat and the volume will be long gone by then.
