Oli Bayston from Boxed In Shared a Late Night Playlist [Stream]

Boxed In – Mystery SoundCloud

With an undeniably catchy piano riff leading the charge, the first track from Boxed In’s self-titled album is a strong start for the up-and-coming UK outfit. Drenched in quick, crisp percussion, elaborate synth and guitar lines and distinctive bass, the album is much more than “Mystery”, though. While most songs follow an upbeat, danceable formula, they don’t shy away from slower jams like “Bug” and “Sailing”, leaving listeners with a fully realized body of work.

I caught them at Baby’s All Right when the band came through New York, and their live production was impressive to say the least, perfectly weaving the many layers present on each track. While they may not be headed back to the US anytime soon, be on the lookout for new dates — they’re definitely worth checking out.

We asked Oli Bayston from the band to put together a playlist of some of this favorite songs, and he sent back “The Witching Hour”:

A selection of music fit for the hour 4am – 5am. Always an interesting turning point in an evening out, often a time I enjoy listening to music the most.

Loose Joints – Is it All Over my Face

This was my go-to party record when I DJ’ed a lot at college. I still love it. Actually, I recorded a Boxed In version a couple of years back. It was one of the first things I did with the Boxed In sound.

George Fitzgerald feat. Boxed In – Full Circle

Is it wrong to put one of my own songs on here? I really enjoyed making this track with George, and we’re working on new material at the moment.

Fela Kuti – Expensive Shit

Fela is a god, and this is one of his anthems. Never a wrong time to play this.

Panda Bear – Boys Latin

This is one of my favorite tracks, and in fact albums, of this year. The synth sounds are amazing. His vocal lines are always so pop, but they’re masked by a canopy of psychedelic glory.

Pepe Bradock – Abul Abbas

Pepe is my favorite house producer in the world. Hands down.

Aphex Twin – Xtal

This one is from Selected Ambient Works 85-92. I hear a lot of Manuel Gottsching’s music in this. He released music about the same time. I wonder who influenced who.

Manuel Gotsching – E2-E4

This is one of the great electronic records. It clocks in at about 50 minutes, and never gets tired. You can hear this music in so many electronic records that came after it.

Colin Stetson – Judges

Colin Stetson is a bass saxophonist using circular breathing throughout, with countless contact mics attached all over the instrument. Seeing him perform this on videos is an inspiring and painful thing to watch. He looks like he’s going to explode.

LA Priest – Learning to Love

I quite liked Late of the Pier, but this is a great step in the right direction for Sam. Good stuff.

Debussy – Nocturne
