Would You Pretend to Know a Designer You’ve Never Heard Of?

By Attireclub @attireclub

Back a while ago, US comedy show Jimmy Kimmel Live made a short clip for their “Lie Witness News” segment in which they interviewed different people outside the Fashion Week shows. Nothing out of the ordinary about that. Yet.

The twist the show brought was that they asked these fashion fans about designers who do not exist, creations that never walked the runway and so on. The outcome, was, as you can imagine. It was extremely funny, yet kind of sad. So many people commented on the clothes of fake designers, even claiming it’s kind of their style.

And that’s good comedy. But it’s not a great representation of the fashion world, reinforcing stereotypes about superficiality and vanity. The people in the video clearly continued the interview because they did not want to seem ignorant or that they did not know something. We’re sure most of them know their fashion and were just to happy to ruin their television moment by saying “I’m clueless”. It would have been better if they had though.

Another thing they did was that they asked people what they thought about some photoshopped creations that did not actually look like that. We liked it that there was a girl who was so surprised and said she didn’t liked it.

To be honest, we love a good comedy, but we also think that there are a few things we can learn from this:

1. When you don’t know, ask.

2. There’s nothing wrong with not liking something. The fashion world is so diverse that you don’t have to approve of all the creations of all the designers. That’s what makes the world go round, don’t you think?

3. Whether on television or not, some people just lie to your face.

Anyway, why we brought this up is because we want to make sure that elegantologists like yourself won’t have an embarrassing TV moment like these folks had, and if some of them are reading this post, they’re welcome too on attireclub.org to educate their taste and join the discussion on personal style and fashion!

P.S. Would you pretend to know a designer you’ve never heard of? Well, the answer seems obvious now, but we do want to hear your comments and reaction!
