As cold weather approaches, it’s time to be on the lookout for winter seasonals. At Gordon BierschWinterBock dark lager is back on tap–but only through January, so be sure to catch it while you can!

WinterBock has an interesting history, to say the least. This strong, dark beer was used by eleventh century Bavarian monks to help sustain themselves during winter fasts. These creamy bocks ensured that the monks would fast frequently. Gordon Biersch WinterBock is a classic dark double bock featuring 4 different types of malt: Munich malt, pilsner malt, dark roasted caramel malt, and black malt (information courtesy of Gordon Biersch website).

I stopped into Gordon Biersch in Broomfield recently in order to try WinterBock for myself. I normally lean toward hoppier beers, but as the season changes I like to break routine and seek out something malty with lots of body–and this beer definitely fits the bill. Though full-bodied and with a fairly high ABV (7.5%), I found it to be very easy-drinking with a slight sweetness and a hint of chocolate.

Mediterranean Pizza (as a flatbread).

During my visit I was in need of some lunch, and upon browsing the menu I noticed a section called “Perfect Pairings,” a handy guide that helps guests create pairings that are sure to complement each other. This is a great tool for those who are looking to get the most out of the flavors of both the beer and food.

Because WinterBock is malty, it is very versatile and can be paired with many types of food. It goes especially well with pizzas and grilled and smoked foods. I chose the Mediterranean Pizza, as I do not eat meat but wanted something grilled. The grilled artichokes really brought out the flavor of the beer, and vice versa.

The Mediterranean pizza was delicious, especially with the beer. I would also suggest trying WinterBock with the Blackened Steak Flatbread, Smoked Chicken & Mushroom Pasta or the Kobe Black & Bleu Burger.

WinterBock is only available through January, so don’t wait to try this 2014 World Beer Cup Gold Medal winning beer!
